9/13

Yesterday we picked up the party invitations that we had printed at Day Moon Press. It's a great place

that does letterpress work and wonderful typesetting by hand. I found an interesting web site about letterpress here.

Our invitations are very simple; really just the type and a small photo. We decided to use the one you can see below

on this page. It's not a conventional wedding photo but it's definitely the best photo we have of our week on San Juan.

The last photo is from Nicole and Prue's joint birthday party.

When Nicole went to mail the invitations, the envelopes were too heavy and she had to add more postage.

While she was doing this, several people came up to buy stamps. All of them asked for ones with the American flag;

definitely a bright spot during a very sad week.

Late last month, Nicole and I got married. It's the biggest thing - and best thing - that's ever happened to me.

All the odd things I've done to end up here - leaving Brisbane to go to Sydney; leaving Sydney to come to Seattle -

seem to have had a purpose after all. I don't think there's any higher power at work but it does all seem

very wonderful. There's so much more to say but if you clicked onto my web site randomly, you probably don't

care and if you know Nicole and I, you've probably heard it all already. She's just wonderful.

Because our families are so far away, we decided to have a very small wedding (perhaps that was a good excuse to have

the small wedding we wanted). We rented a beach house on San Juan Island for a week and invited four friends to

be with us. After our wedding on Tuesday afternoon, the six of us made dinner then played Cranium (where I

discovered that my wife can't even hum a song, let along sing one). It was all very relaxed. The next day, our friends

went back to Seattle and we stayed on for the rest of the week. We bought tons of magazines, good food and

watched the killer whales go past each afternoon. There was even a pair of Harlequin ducks nearby.

It was better than we could have hoped for and was a good start to our married life together.

Photographic life has continued outside of getting married. In fact, we had eleven boxes of slides from the

wedding week but an additional ten boxes of slides that we hadn't gone through yet. That's really a lot of

pictures and we ended up tossing out a lot (ten boxes became one). Note to self: don't bother trying to

photograph the Blue Angels again; the pictures are always very disappointing and/or completely unoriginal.

However, there were a few good ones. I love the photo of Angus. This was taken at the wedding shower our

friends threw for us (thanks Prue, Angela, Amity, Jim and Peter!). He looks like he's welcoming people to the party:

"Hello, my name is Mr. Angus; welcome to a little party I'm throwing for some close friends".

The last two photos are of Nicole competing in the Danskin triathlon. It was the day we left for the San Juans

and I was very impressed by the whole event. Swimming - racing! - for half a mile in Lake Washington,

not the warmest body of water around, is not something I'd choose to do but I admire my wife's pluck

(and, yes, I am using "wife" more than is absolutely necessary).
